Every moment of blossoming 

        is a moment of extreme violence

 

Coccyx snapping under the pressure of birth

Parasites burrowing blindly into skin

Viruses exploding like strings of firecrackers

 

Yet 

          I understand Hafez’s brilliant faith   

                     as I watch light break through clouds   

                                 over a browning sea

 

Sardines gathering in a flickering mass

Briny pilgrims wrapped within a coat of surf

Plucked one by one by a winged savior from above
