Shortly after dawn the California Zephyr stops outside Elko. A forest of thistle and a small tree have grown in the coal of a freight car abandoned on a spur. Morning shadows drain into the roots of the greasewood. The conductor announces that we’re atop the line that divides the Mountain and Pacific Time Zones.
